The Best Thai Cooking Class: Thai Farm Cooking School

The Best Thai Cooking Class: Thai Farm Cooking School

Thai Farm Cooking School was one of our favorite experiences while visiting Chiang Mai and a definite must do if you are visiting Thailand for the first time. Scott was able to fly into Thailand in Business class for FREE, see how here.  Scott and I both LOVE Thai food but never fully understood all the unique ingredients that give Thai food SO much flavor until this Thai cooking class. We cooked all of our favorite dishes including Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, sticky rice and much more. See my post on all my favorite dishes in Thailand coming soon. Now where the heck do we find fish sauce, galangal, Thai basil, kaffir lime, and tamarind in Dallas, Texas?! We will definitely be on a search so we can cook some of this delicious food when we get back. Read on to learn about our day cooking at the organic family farm!

Cruising Ha Long Bay, Vietnam: A Paradise Luxury Cruise Review

Cruising Ha Long Bay, Vietnam: A Paradise Luxury Cruise Review

If you are planning a trip to Vietnam, a cruise through Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a definite must to add to your bucket list! Cruising through this bay with Paradise Luxury Cruises was an unforgettable experience. With 1,969 rainforest topped limestone islets jetting up out of the sea at every turn, this is a one of a kind cruise.

Booking the right cruise

There are day tours from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, but the ride itself just to the bay is a 4 hour drive. We thought the best way to relax and get the most out of our experience would be to book a 2 night/3 day cruise. There are also 1 night/2 day cruises available, but we figured a 2 night would be more enjoyable. We were very glad we opted for the 2 day cruise! Another perk of booking a cruise are the planned excursions and kayaking, as well as the delicious food. We thought the money was well worth it.

There are a TON of cruise lines to choose from when booking a Ha Long Bay Tour. Be very careful when selecting your cruise as we learned that pictures can be VERY misleading after reading some of the reviews. Another tip would be to read reviews from multiple sources and as many as possible. I read reviews from Google, Trip Advisor, Expedia, and Booking etc.

How to Fly Business Class for Free to Asia with Alaska Miles on Cathay Pacific

How to Fly Business Class for Free to Asia with Alaska Miles on Cathay Pacific

How to Fly Business Class for Free!

Lets face it, flying across the ocean is a loooong flight.  It’s especially long if you’re flying economy.  What’s better than flying economy?  Flying business class.  What’s better than flying business class?  Flying business class for free!  Read on to see how I flew business class for free to Asia with Alaska Miles!

Kim and I have been planning to do an Asia trip for some time.  We went to Bali a few years ago and had some amazing adventures climbing Mt Agung (which is currently erupting) and white water tubing.  We’ve wanted to head back to that area of the world ever since.  Kim headed out a couple weeks before I did to Singapore and Bali and our plan was to meet in Thailand.  Kim had quite the stressful time escaping the volcano but we both made it to Bangkok in one piece!

Find the Best Redemption Rates

Many domestic airlines will partner with multiple international airlines to expand their offerings to their customer bases.  When using points, these points will transfer at different rates depending on the agreements set up between air carriers.  For flying to Asia from the US, I think one of the best redemption options is using Alaska Airlines miles on Cathay Pacific.

Alaska to Cathay Pacific Asia

US to Asia redemption rates using Alaska miles

Flying business class on Cathay Pacific one way from the US to Asia is 50,000 Alaska miles.  If you want to up the ante and fly first class its 70,000 Alaska miles (one way).  If you were to use American Airlines miles, who also partner with Cathay Pacific, this redemption would cost you 120,000 miles for business or 160,000 for first!  Choosing the right partner to redeem your miles is important when trying to maximize the value of your miles/points.

Planning a Mega Trip: How to Fly for Free

Planning a Mega Trip: How to Fly for Free

How to Fly for Free

Recently, after 4 years working as a dentist with the longest break being for a week, I decided to take some time off and do some traveling. With Kim working as a professional dog walker through Rover.com, it was easy for her to take a break as well and travel with me.  we felt it was the right time for planning a mega trip!

Summers in Dallas are HOT! We decided that traveling for the whole summer would be a great way to avoid the heat here and see all sorts of new places as well.

The prospect of planning a mega trip is daunting. We talked about planning it for over a month before starting. I think it took us so long just because of the amount of brain power needed to plan so many flights, accommodations and activities while utilizing our rewards points as much as possible.

We knew there were several things we wanted to do, the list included:

Going to Michigan (my home state) and spending some time there with my family and friends

Going to Florida (where Kim’s family lives) and spending time there

Going to Hawaii

Going to Cuba with some of Kim’s friends for their birthday

Visiting my grandfather in Las Vegas Continue reading →
